Legislative Update: August 5, 2016

It’s my honor and privilege to serve as your new State Representative for the 81st Legislative House District. In keeping with past efforts to keep the people of the 81st District informed about issues taking place in Springfield and at home, I will use this E-Newsletter as a quick and financially-prudent method for communicating with you. Should you decide you no longer wish to receive these emails, there is an unsubscribe button at the bottom of this page.

I took my oath of office on Wednesday, August 3rd, at an outdoor ceremony held at my alma mater, Downers Grove South High School. Principal Edward H. Schwartz welcomed guests to the ceremony and Associate Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh of the 18th Judicial Circuit administered the oath of office. In the photo, you'll see that my grandmother, Beverly Olsen of Glenview, was holding the bible during the ceremony. In my personal remarks I expressed my gratitude and excitement about this new chapter in my life as the voice of the people of District 81. It was particularly appropriate that I was sworn in at my own former high school, which provided the foundation for my successes and public service. I believe firmly that Education is the foundation of opportunity for all Illinoisans, and I intend to fight for local control and full funding for our vitally-important schools.

A long-time resident of Downers Grove, I grew up in the 81st District and attended local public schools. I also attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I earned degrees in Finance and Management. In February of this year I was appointed to serve as a College of DuPage Trustee and Board Vice Chairman, and will remain in that role until that term expires in Spring of 2017. I also served as a member of the Downers Grove Village Council from 2013 until Wednesday, just a few hours before taking my oath of office for the General Assembly.

I work as an ethics and compliance officer and volunteer in the community as a member of the Board of Directors for the District 58 Education Foundation and as an active member of the local chamber of commerce. I am a member of Friendship United Methodist Church of Bolingbrook, and also serve as a committee chairman for local Boy Scout Troop 35.

My district office will remain at 633 Rogers Street, Suite 108, in Downers Grove. The phone number will also not change. You may reach me or my staff at (630) 737-0504. Again, it is the honor of a lifetime to assume this new role, and please know I will be a voice in Springfield for taxpayers who are desperate for tax relief. I welcome your calls, so if you would like to speak with me or meet with me, please reach out to my Downers Grove office.

Olsen to Offer Free Community Outreach Events in August

Shredding & Sharing
This Saturday, August 6, I will partner with AT&T and Sharing Connections for “Shredding & Sharing,” a combined document shredding event and collection drive that will be held on the Sharing Connections property at 5111 Chase Avenue, Downers Grove. As I begin my tenure in the Illinois House of Representatives, I can think of no better first community outreach effort than a joint event with one of this region’s finest agencies, Sharing Connections. This is an organization that provides a lifeline to local families in crisis.

From 9:00 AM until noon, residents can drive up and watch volunteers unload up to two bags or boxes of paper documents per vehicle. A nearby parking area will be available for those who want to watch their documents as they are fed into the shredding machine. The cost of the truck is being underwritten by AT&T. In addition, Sharing Connections will be accepting new cleaning and personal care supplies and new or gently-used silverware, glassware, pots and pans, dishes and clothing for all seasons.

The shred truck provides citizens with a safe and secure way to dispose of sensitive documents like old bank statements, tax documents and receipts. I’m looking forward to a large turnout so I can begin meeting my new constituents. For additional information about this event, please call my Downers Grove office.

Understanding & Learning How to Appeal Your Property Taxes
The next Saturday, on August 13, I will partner with three local tax experts for a free seminar on understanding the property tax assessment process and learning how to appeal property tax assessments. The event will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM at the Lincoln Center Auditorium, 935 Maple Avenue, Downers Grove. Joining me at the informational session will be Naperville Township Assessor Warren Dixon III, Lisle Township Assessor John Trowbridge and a representative from the Downers Grove Township Assessor’s office. The assessment process is very confusing to many people, and it is my pleasure to bring experts together so that residents can gain a better understanding of the assessment and appeals process. It is my hope that citizens leave this informational session with a better understanding of the process and with knowledge of the remedies that are available to them. Due to space constraints, RSVPs are requested. If you would like to attend the property tax forum, please RSVP by calling my Downers Grove office.

Open House
In my next E-Newsletter I will announce a date and time for an open house that will be held at my district office. I would encourage as many people as possible to stop by so I can introduce myself and begin learning about the issues that are important to you. I look forward to hearing about your priorities so that I can be your voice in our State’s Capitol.

Olsen Launches Web Site
My staff is working hard to make my transition into the Illinois General Assembly as seamless as possible. To that end, I already have a website that will be populated with useful information for the people I represent. Please visit www.repolsen.com frequently to learn about upcoming community events, and about issues of importance coming out of Springfield.

As your voice in Springfield, I will work tirelessly to make our state and our local communities a great place to live, work and raise a family. I am interested in speaking to community groups, so if you would like me to speak to an organization within the 81st District, please contact my office at (630) 737-0504, or contact me through the web form located on my web site at www.repolsen.com.
