Olsen Presents Proclamation Recognizing Eating Disorders Awareness Week at Downers Grove South High School

Today State Representative David S. Olsen (R-Downers Grove) visited Downers Grove South High School to present a proclamation recognizing Eating Disorders Awareness Week in Illinois. The proclamation from Governor Bruce Rauner was presented to Linda Lewaniak of the Chicago Eating Recovery Center and several student leaders from Downers Grove South.

“It was a pleasure to mark the start of Eating Disorders Awareness Week by presenting the Governor’s proclamation at my former high school, Downers Grove South,” said Olsen. “Eating disorders are serious, biologically-based illnesses that affect millions of people every year and can be life-threatening. I am glad to be able to shine a light on the importance of research, diagnosis and treatment of these disorders which too often remain in the shadows.”

In accepting the proclamation, Lewaniak noted that recovery from eating disorders requires comprehensive treatment. “Eating disorders are often inadvertently ignored and, perhaps worse, undertreated when identified by a health care professional,” she said. “Eating Recovery Center is committed to providing the most compassionate, comprehensive, and innovative care for individuals of all genders, shapes and sizes who struggle with eating disorders.”

In addition to the Governor’s proclamation, Olsen has filed House Resolution 710 recognizing the week of February 26 as Eating Disorders Awareness Week in Illinois. “HR 710 received unanimous approval at the committee level and has a bipartisan group of co-sponsors,” Olsen said. “I am hopeful it will be approved by the full House this week,” Olsen said.
